However THERE IS A WAY to make it work without having a WiFi router I use my phone as my only internet connection so I was pissed off when I bought a Chromecast and found I couldn't use it! I tried using the phone's portable WiFi hotspot to connect the chromecast to, but if the phone was being used as a hotspot then it couldn't be used to set up the chromecast (the chromecast app kept switching the hotspot off )However I worked out how to do it like so: It does need an on-going internet connection, it stops working when it looses the internet, so the cheap router not connected to the internet idea won't work. Chromecast would have to be set up initially in an environment in which there's not only wifi, but an internet connection, since the first thing it does is download an upgrade.
